Questions

A deeper understanding of after∙light

This page offers clarity around the subtler aspects of the work - the questions that often arise when someone is preparing to meet their grief in a new way.

Each answer is written gently and without assumption, allowing you to explore at your own pace.

The after∙light Blog is a fantastic resource for experiences and questions surrounding grief.

You're welcome to have a read, and perhaps you'll find some answers to questions you didn't know you had...

Is this work suitable for complex or long-standing grief?

Yes.

after∙light was created with the understanding that grief rarely moves in a straight line, and that “complex grief” is often a natural response to an experience that overwhelmed the heart.

If your grief involves:
– unresolved emotions
– difficult relational dynamics
– sudden or traumatic passing
– years of something unspoken
– a sense that your life “paused” around the loss

…this work can support you in meeting the layers one at a time, without flooding or forcing anything to move before you’re ready.

The breath offers a pathway that is gentle, paced, and self-regulating.

2

How does breathwork interact with subtle or intuitive experiences?

after∙light does not create or chase altered states.
However, when emotional density softens, your sensitivity increases.

In that clearer internal landscape, people often perceive:

– symbolic imagery
– a sense of presence
– intuitive understanding
– sudden clarity
– words or impressions that feel meaningful

These experiences are not “contact” in a mediumistic sense.
They arise from your inner world - the deeper intelligence that holds memory, connection, and unfinished threads.

The breath simply makes space for what is already there.

3

What if my grief resurfaced years, or decades, after the passing?

Grief has no timeline.

Shock, responsibility, or emotional survival can delay expression for years.
When the body finally feels safe enough, old grief often rises as if it were recent.

after∙light supports this beautifully because it doesn’t rely on memory or story.
The breath works with what your system is holding right now, not what happened then.
Old grief can feel surprisingly fresh, and the breath gives it a pathway to move without overwhelm.

4

What if I’m unsure whether what I’m feeling is grief?

You don’t need a clear definition.
Many people come with a feeling they can’t quite name - heaviness, distance, emotional static, a sense of something unfinished.

If something inside you feels tight, muted, or unexpressed, the breath will meet it gently.

5

Can dreams or sleep disturbances be part of the process?

Yes.
Dreams often carry the material your conscious mind hasn’t fully processed.

After a session, people sometimes report:
– vivid dreams
– symbolic imagery
– seeing or feeling the person who passed
– emotional themes resurfacing
– unusually peaceful sleep

You don’t need to interpret anything.
Your system is simply reorganising itself.

6

How do you understand “connection” in after•light?

Connection, in this work, is not about reaching outward.
It is about clearing the internal space that allows you to sense what remains - memory, love, understanding, or the subtle continuity of relationship.

It may feel like:
– warmth
– clarity
– a soft recognition
– a moment of peace
– a sense that something “clicked”

Contact is not something we manufacture.
It’s something you become quiet enough to feel.

7

How often should I have sessions?

There is no standard pacing, but common rhythms are:

every 1–2 weeks if you’re in an active grieving phase
monthly for ongoing emotional clarity or gentle connection
as needed if your grief comes in waves

The breath works cumulatively, but also respectfully - you can give yourself as much space as you need.

8

Is after•light the same as therapy?

No.
Therapy works primarily through conversation and cognitive or emotional exploration.

after∙light works through:
– the breath
– the nervous system
– the body’s internal intelligence
– subtle layers of memory and connection

It can complement therapy beautifully but is not a replacement for psychological or medical support.
Many people work with both, letting each modality touch a different part of their experience.

9

What if nothing happens?

A quiet session is still a session.
Some of the deepest shifts happen when very little appears to be occurring externally.

You may notice:
– softness
– groundedness
– spaciousness
– a clearer breath
– understanding that arrives later

The breath continues reorganising long after the session ends.

10

Can I become overwhelmed?

The work is intentionally paced to avoid overwhelm.
Matthew guides the breath so your system stays regulated and safe, easing intensity before it rises.

If at any point you feel uncomfortable, you will be guided back to grounding and steadiness.

11

Is after•light safe if I have mental health conditions?

Most people can participate safely, with the exception of:

– active psychosis
– bipolar or schizophrenia
– untreated mania
– severe dissociation
– high-risk pregnancy
– certain cardiovascular conditions

– uncontrolled diabetes

– recent surgery

– glaucoma or detached retina

If you are unsure, please reach out privately and we can explore whether this work is appropriate for you right now.

12

Can this help if the grief is not from death?

Yes.
after∙light also supports emotional processing around:

– breakups
– estrangement
– identity shifts
– life transitions
– endings of any kind

Grief is not limited to physical loss.

13

Can I talk during the session if I need to?

Absolutely.
While the breath is the main pathway and ongoing connection to it is encouraged, you can speak whenever something important arises.

Your words often help guide the next layer of the work.

14

What if I’ve never done breathwork before?

Beginners often find this approach easier than they expect.
The breath pattern is simple, intuitive, and guided throughout.
You don’t need prior experience or technical understanding.

15

Do I need to believe in spirituality or the “beyond”?

No.
The work meets you wherever you stand.
Some people approach this through spirituality, some through psychology, some through simple curiosity about the breath.

after∙light does not impose belief - it simply opens space for what feels true to you.
